Educating the Whole Child
At Stanley BPS, we have a broad and ambitious vision for education. Our goal is to develop in children their full potential – social/emotional, intellectual, creative, and physical. Our curriculum reflects this commitment to the development of the “whole” child.

Social/Emotional
The social/emotional development of children is at the heart of our curriculum and key
to our central purpose of helping children become contributing members of the world.
In all areas of the curriculum and at all times of the day, our teachers are:
  • nurturing confidence and encouraging empathy
  • exploring values and teaching respect for individual differences
  • discussing issues with children and helping them to find solutions for conflicts that arise
  • fostering the development of caring, responsible, and flexible citizens
Intellectual
We believe that children should be interested and excited about their learning
as well as intellectually challenged. K-8 students at Stanley BPS are offered a rigorous and
developmentally-appropriate curriculum in social studies, math, computer technology,
language arts, science, Spanish and environmental education.

The Stanley BPS curriculum is a reflection of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that
students will need to succeed in the real world.  Our students learn how to:
  • question and think inventively and critically
  • research, observe, and explore
  • hypothesize, interpret data, and formulate conclusions
At Stanley BPS, students often learn through first-hand experiences. They are then allowed time for reflection, discussion, and expression of their ideas.

Creative
Stanley BPS teachers encourage creativity in all areas of the curriculum.  They respond positively when children question, see things in new ways, and problem-solve.  Teachers strive to provide a safe environment within which children feel free to express themselves.

Music, drama, creative movement and art, while often integrated into the classroom, are also taught by teachers specializing in these areas. These  teachers build on work already done in the classroom and provide children with opportunities to learn the skills required to extend their artistic work to new levels.

Physical
At Stanley BPS we believe that by learning to lead an active and healthy life, children develop confidence in themselves as competent and powerful human beings. Stanley BPS provides a variety of formats for physical activity:
  • Playground design is carefully considered to meet children’s many physical needs, from soccer to imaginary play.
  • Music class offers movement to many different kinds of music and rhythms.
  • P.E. classes encourage the development of multiple skills, understanding of the body’s repertoire of movement, and the ability to work and play with others.
  • Creative movement classes promote body expression.
  • Middle School students are offered an after-school sports program including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, and general sports.
